Credit for the Armed Forces/Military Credit
A veteran or member of the active armed forces, National Guard, or Reserve component who is a student may be eligible for credit for educational experiences in the armed forces.
- Credit recommendations in the Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experiences in the Armed Forces (published by the American Council on Education, ACE*) for military service school training will be considered for transfer credit as follows:
- (1) credit granted for college-level, baccalaureate-oriented training and education will be accepted following the standard UM-Dearborn transfer of credit policy,
- (2) vocational credit related to the student’s curriculum choice will be referred for consideration to the department teaching related content, and
- (3) duplicate credit will not be considered. Credits can not be used to “double count” toward classes in which the student has already earned a passing grade or for currently enrolled courses past the 10th day of the semester.
- Applicability of military credit toward particular degree/program requirements is determined
- by the department from which the degree/program is offered.
- Credit awarded via military can be used to meet any of the University graduation requirements except for the residency requirement in which a student must complete 30 credits at UM-Dearborn.
- Petitions for military credit prior to attending the University of Michigan-Dearborn should be submitted within the first semester. Petitions for military credit are not permitted in a student’s last full semester or during the Spring and Summer Terms.
*ACE recommendations: American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations when transferring military credits. ACE works closely with the Department of Defense to translate military training and experiences into academic credit, providing standards that schools can use to evaluate what credits to award.
