EDM 290     History Education in Elementary Schools     3 Credit Hours

An exploration of history education in grades PK-6 in Michigan. In the design of lessons, students apply their knowledge of the histories and cultures of Indigenous, European, and African peoples in the Americas. As they examine the formation of the United States and the history of Michigan, they utilize the Inquiry Design Model (IDM) to advance historical understanding among children. Students also learn about economic education in elementary schools. (F, W).

EDM 291     Democracy and Education     3 Credit Hours

This course explores civic education in grades PK-6 in Michigan. Students study democratic principles, structures, and practices. They examine how problem-solving and inquiry-based, experiential learning foster agency and civic-mindedness. (F, W).

EDM 292     The world around us: Integrated world geography for upper elementary teachers     3 Credit Hours

This course will prepare students to teach geography and economics content in grades 3–6. This course will focus on the geographic and economic tools (e.g., maps, charts, graphs, pictures, children’s literature, Geographic Information Systems, Google Earth, simulations) and skills (e.g., spatial thinking, inquiry, critical literacy) used to teach geography and economics concepts. EDM 405     TESOL Strategies for Classrm     3 Credit Hours

This course examines instructional strategies and assessment for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). These strategies are intended for students who are learning English as a foreign language. This course is specifically designed for individuals planning on teaching English to children and adults in non-English speaking communities abroad.

EDM 4100     Teach Eng Specific Purposes     3 Credit Hours

Full Course Title: Teaching English for Specific Purposes This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to teach adult speakers of other languages to use English for specific purposes. These are students who will already have a working knowledge of English, but need to have more specialized language for professional, academic and/or job-related skills. (YR)

EDM 450     Intercultural Education     3 Credit Hours

This course explores the teaching of diverse student populations. Students examine issues of race, ethnicity, language, gender, and socioeconomic status. They study equity and inclusion in school settings. The focus is on providing an education of high quality to all students. (F, W).
