It requires that prospective teachers work to construct initial theories of social studies teaching and learning, including an understanding of content selection (e.g., How do I know which knowledge and skills are the most important?); teaching (e.g., Which ways of teaching best help children learn important knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values?); learning (e.g., How do I know when my students have and have not learned something?); and the critical role of social studies education in the school curriculum (e.g., Can social studies serve as the integrating core?). Overall, this course provides students an opportunity to acquire a solid grasp of the elementary social studies curriculum and be prepared to begin planning and implementing meaningful and engaging social studies units. EDD 499     Secondary Social Studies Methods     3 Credit Hours

This course examines theoretical and practical approaches to teaching social studies at the secondary level. Students explore, develop, and evaluate instructional methods. Per professional standards, students consider diverse strategies for teaching and assessing middle and high school students. While it is accurately described as a "methods" course, it is more than a collection of teaching strategies. Its main purpose is to equip the secondary social studies teacher with tools for teaching history, geography, economics, and civics. This course requires that prospective teachers work to construct initial theories of social studies teaching and learning, including an understanding of content selection (e.g., How do I know which knowledge and skills are the most important?); teaching (e.g., Which ways of teaching best help children learn important knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values?); learning (e.g., How do I know when my students have and have not learned content?); and the critical role of social studies education in the school curriculum (e.g., Can social studies serve as the integrating core?). Overall, this course provides students with an opportunity to acquire a solid grasp of social studies curriculum, problems of practice, and the role of inquiry in social studies education. (F).
